Updated: Thursday, May 7 2015, 06:08 PM EDT Rochester, N.Y. – Rochester leaders are dedicating a week each year to bikes — and the benefits they bring to the community. On Thursday, Mayor Lovely Warren proclaimed next week, May 10th through 16th, “Bike Week.” She also praised R Community Bikes, an all-volunteer organization that builds new bikes out of old parts and gives them to city residents. “I frequently say that our name R community Bikes sounds a little bit like ‘our’ community bikes. And that’s really what we are,” said Dan Lill. “We are part of this community, in return the community is part of us as well.” Since 2010, R Community Bikes has repaired or built 20,000 new bikes for the Rochester-area. As for biking, Mayor Warren says bike riding is good for the environment, good for health, and provides an alternative transporation source for many trying to get to and from work every day.
